The development of low-cost magnesium sheet should provide significant opportunities for application in automobiles, especially using hot blow forming technologies. The present talk will review recent work in three critical areas. The first is laboratory characterization of magnesium sheet through uniaxial tensile testing and biaxial bulge forming including a comparison of ingot cast and continuously cast magnesium sheet. Secondly, recent accomplishments in finite element modeling of deformation to predict forming of magnesium components and efforts to integrate this work with materials-based computational modeling will be reviewed. Finally magnesium sheet application development will be addressed. The talk will describe opportunities for research that would enable greater use of magnesium sheet in all three areas.
