Superplasticity in ceramics has been an attractive scientific challenge since its discovery in 1986. Despite the intense research effort for a fully comprehension of the origin of this phenomenon and the large number of superplastic ceramic systems, there is still a lack on our knowledge in this matter. Most analytical models have been derived from the classical Ashby-Verrall model. This presentation outlines a recent analysis of such model and it goes forward on the search of a better-founded one from statistical basis. A new model is proposed which is able to explain the disparity of creep parameters measured in superplastic ceramics. Furthermore, it gives some insight into the essential physical quantities accounting for superplasticity in these materials.
