Induction heating with smart susceptors using cast ceramic dies shows several key advantages. These advantages include short flow time tooling fabrication, cold die part loading, quick part heat-up, even and repeatable thermal characteristics, quick part cool-down, good dimensional control of the part, reduced part oxidation and high quality diffusion bonding. These processing attributes were demonstrated on complex shape superplasticly formed and diffusion bonded 2-sheet and 4-sheet Ti 6Al-4V components. Discussions will include a description of the induction SPF/DB process to achieve these advantages, the tooling used, and the resulting part quality.
